Use Photos from iPhoto !

Use your Mac Desktop as a large digital frame of sorts. You can show favorite pictures from albums you've created in iPhoto, and have them change every so often, too.

Open System Preferences (in the Apple menu). Click Desktop & Screen Saver (in the first row). This will bring-up settings for Desktop wallpaper and Screen Saver. Then, click the Desktop tab.

If the left column of the settings windows, you'll see a number of folders from which you can choose images to be displayed on the Mac Desktop.

Toward the bottom of the list, iPhoto Albums is listed. Click the triangle to view the albums you've created in iPhoto. Select one of the albums. Your Desktop will change instantly, displaying a photo from the album.
Now, in the same window, check the "Change picture" setting and choose when or how often you'd like the Desktop wallpaper to change. For example: every 30 minutes. You can click the "Random order" setting to have the next Desktop picture randomly selected from the iPhoto album.

One final finesse. In the settings window, above the thumbnail photos, you can specify how you'd like the photo to display on the Desktop: Fit to Screen, Fill Screen, Stretch to Fill Screen, Center and Tile. Play with the options and select what you like best.

Change your Screen Saver

Your desktop picture is the most high-profile item on your computer. Likewise, your screen saver is the most high profile item when you're not. And like the desktop picture, you can change the default screen saver, use your own slideshow creation, or use a third-party screen saver.

To swap your current screen saver for another one:

Mac OS X contains several preinstalled screen savers

From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences to open the System Preferences window.
Click the Desktop & Screen Saver button to display its preferences.
Click the Screen Saver tab to display just the Screen Saver preferences. All installed screen savers appear in the left pane. The right pane displays a preview of the selected screen saver.
Click one of the Screen Saver items in the left pane to select it for use.
If you'd like, click Test to see what the screen saver will look like in use.

To create a slideshow screen saver, do one of the following:

By selecting Library, your Mac will automatically create a slideshow screen saver made from your iPhoto pictures.

In the Screen Saver preferences window, select Library or one of the two choices below it to turn your iPhoto images into a slideshow screen saver.
In the Screen Saver preferences window, select Pictures Folder to display the images in it, or select Choose Folder, navigate to and select a folder that contains images in the resulting dialog, then click Choose to put it in use.

To add a third-party screen saver:

Once you install a third-party screen saver, either through an installer or manually,
you can select it just like you would with the preinstalled ones.

If the screen saver doesn't have an installer to place the file in the right folder, locate the .saver file in the package.
Drag the file into the Screen Savers folder, which is in the Library folder at the root of your hard disk ~/Library/Screen Savers.
Follow the steps in "swap your current screen saver for another one," above, to select the third-party screen saver.

Customize your Screen Saver
Now that you've selected a new screen saver, you can further customize its settings. Here are some of the things you can do in the Screen Saver preferences window.

Click Options to view the selected screen saver's user-configurable display settings and adjust them to your liking. These settings will vary screen saver to screen saver.
Move the "Start screen saver" slider left or right to change the time, in minutes, at which the screen saver begins to play.
If you'd like the ability to start the screen saver manually, click Hot Corners. In the resulting dialog, choose Start Screen Saver from any of the four corner pop-up menus and click OK. The screen saver will start when you move your arrow to your chosen screen corner.
If you're the adventurous type, select "Use random screen saver," and your Mac will automatically select a screen saver when it goes into screen saver mode.

Find Wallpapers on a Mac

Step 1
Click the System Preferences application icon in your Dock. If you do not have the System Preferences icon in your dock, access System Preferences from the "Apple" menu on the system toolbar.

Step 2
Click the "Desktop & Screen Saver" pane from the System Preferences menu. Choose a folder from "Apple." If you do not see folders, click the small gray arrow next to "Apple" under the wallpaper list. Macs come with wallpapers in the categories of Nature, Plants, Black & White, Abstract and Solid Colors. Click on a folder to display its wallpapers.

Step 3
Select a format from the drop-down menu above the wallpaper icons. Choose between "Fit to Screen," "Fill Screen," "Stretch to Fill Screen," "Center" and "Tile." Check the "Change picture" box under the wallpaper icons to enable wallpaper slide show mode. Set the rotation rate for every five seconds, minute, five minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, hour or day.

Step 4
Click "iPhoto Albums" to select a photo from your iPhoto library to set as your wall paper. If you do not see a list of your iPhoto albums, click the small gray arrow next to "iPhoto Albums." Click any photo to set it as your desktop.

Step 5
Click the "+" sign under the wallpaper list to add your own folder of wallpaper images. Click an image within the folder to set it as your wallpaper.

Step 6
Use any image as your desktop wallpaper by dragging and dropping it into the wallpaper box in the Desktop & Screensaver tab of System Preferences

Set Your RSS Reader to Be Your Desktop Wallpaper !

Navigate to the folder Windows\Resources\Themes. Either drag and drop the "Aero Theme" file to your desktop, or right-click the file and select "Copy," then right click your Desktop and select "Paste." Save the file by clicking "File," then "Save" in the top Notepad menu. If you don't have a Windows Live login, either create one on Windows' site or skip the option to format with FrameIt.

Step 4
Format the feed to fit your screen by going to FrameIt's site (see Resources) and signing in via your Windows Live login information. Click "Custom" and add the full URL of your RSS feed; it will be formatted automatically. Customize it if necessary by clicking on "Manage Settings" and selecting a different screen size. Click "Set up a frame" to create a link, then copy and paste that link after the equals sign at the end of the Aero Theme file. Save the file.

Step 5
Activate the Aero Theme by double-clicking it. When prompted, chose to save locally. Wait for the RSS feed to download, and within a minute or so, depending on your Internet connection, you'll have the RSS feed on your background.

Make an iPhone's Desktop Background Black !

Press the "Safari" icon to launch the iPhone Safari browser.

Go to the images section of any search engine within the iPhone Safari browser. Type in "black wallpaper" and click on the first black wallpaper image that appears. Press on the image for a few seconds until you are prompted to save it. Press "Save Image."

Go to the main iPhone screen and press "Settings."

Press "Wallpaper."

Select "Desktop Background" to change this wallpaper.

Wallpaper Management Tips !

Screen resolutions are denoted in pixels, e.g. 800 x 600. The numbers indicate how many pixels your monitor can display horizontally (800) and vertically (600). The resolution also reveals that the monitor in this example has an aspect ratio of 4 : 3 (horizontal : vertical pixels).

A perfect wallpaper has to meet two criteria:

high enough resolution
matching aspect ratio

This article from CrunchGear provides a resolution chart (depicted below) that lets you pick the right wallpaper aspect ratio and resolution for your monitor. For example, if your monitor has a resolution of 1600 x 1200 you have a 4:3 aspect ratio. This ratio is color-coded red, so you can use all resolutions in red that are 1600 x 1200 or greater.

So how do you find out your monitor’s native resolution and aspect ratio?

Windows 7

Right-click on the desktop and select > Screen resolution from the menu and look for the number next to > Resolution:

Windows XP

Right-click on the desktop, select > Properties from the menu and switch to the > Settings tab. You’ll see a slider under > Screen resolution in the bottom left.

3. Shuffle Your Wallpapers

Now that you have skimmed through all those resources, you’re left with dozens of wallpapers you like and you cannot make up your mind. Don’t despair because you don’t have to! Rather than settling for just one wallpaper, why not use all of them?

Windows 7

If you have Windows 7 Home or up, you can personalize your computer and that includes your desktop. Right-click on the desktop and select > Personalize. In the bottom left of the window that opens click on > Desktop Background. From > Picture Location: select the folder where you stored your wallpapers or click > Browse… to add a custom folder. Select all the images you want to use, then select the > Picture position define to > Change picture every… and check > Shuffle to not see the same sequence every time. Finally click > Save Changes and enjoy.

Windows XP

Windows XP doesn’t offer an inbuilt tool to shuffle your wallpapers. However, there are many third party applications that can do that trick. I have been using ScrollWall and I also like John’s Background Switcher. Another super fascinating wallpaper tool with a social twist is Wallcast.

4. Create An Unobstructed View Of Your Wallpaper/s

So you have this fantastic wallpaper or maybe you have already set up shuffling, but what is it that you see on your desktop? Lots of icons! To really enjoy the view, you need to get rid of them! 5. Get An Animated Desktop Wallpaper

My final advice should be: keep it simple. However, if you have resources to spare, go ahead and get yourself an animated desktop wallpaper. In Windows 7 you can use your screensaver as a wallpaper. To use a video of your own you have to convert it to an .scr (screensaver) file.

How to validate fonts ?

Validate Font
To validate one or more fonts:

Select the fonts to validate in the list of fonts.
Choose Validate Fonts from the File menu. A Font Validation window opens and shows the results of validation. A green check mark indicates that font passed validation. A red x beside a font tells you there is a problem.

Delete Fonts
If the Font Validation found any problems and you’d like to delete those problem fonts:

Check the box beside the problem font in the Font Validation window.
Click on the Remove Checked button at the bottom of the Font Validation window. An alert appears.
Click to confirm, and the fonts are deleted.

Building
Besides regular Mac apps, Unity can build MacOSX widgets, using the Unity web plugin.

Customization

The widgets are just a web player wrapped with the widget HTML. If you right/option-click on the .wdgt file and select Show Package, you'll see the generated Unity file and accompanying HTML, CSS and images. Any additional files loaded by the widget can be added in the widget. For example, this widget streams a movie, cat.ogv.
You will probably want to customize the default Unity build by replacing the Icon.png file, which is the icon that displays in the Dashboard dock. Version information can be adjusted in the Info.plist file. You can customize the back panel by modifying the HTML and CSS files.

Publishing
Most widgets are submitted and listed on the Apple widget download page. Most widgets are free, though some are listed as shareware. If a widget is listed as a Staff Favorite or Featured Widget, it certainly ends up in the Top 50.

MobileMe + iCloud Transition

iCloud is Apple’s new cloud service, which stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, and documents and wirelessly pushes them to all your devices. iCloud integrates seamlessly with your apps, so everything happens automatically. iCloud will be free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users. MobileMe Services

What’s happening to MobileMe?
The core services provided by MobileMe have been rewritten to work seamlessly with iCloud. MobileMe will no longer be available as a paid sync service. If you had an active MobileMe account as of June 6, 2011, your service has been extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After that date, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.

What happens to the iWeb sites that I’ve published to MobileMe?
You will be able to continue publishing iWeb sites to MobileMe through June 30, 2012, even after moving to iCloud. With iWeb you can easily move a site published to MobileMe to another web hosting service and you should do so before that date. Please read this article for details.

What happens to the pictures that I’ve posted to my MobileMe Gallery?
You will be able to continue using MobileMe Gallery through June 30, 2012, even after moving to iCloud. You should save copies of all photos published to your Gallery before that date. If you have a Mac, it is likely that most of your Gallery photos are already in iPhoto. If not, you can sync the Gallery photos to your iPhoto library. You can also download your photos and movies from the web. Please read this article for details.

What happens to the files on my MobileMe iDisk?
You will be able to continue using MobileMe iDisk through June 30, 2012, even after moving to iCloud. You should save copies of all files stored on iDisk before that date. Please read this article for details.

What happens to the other sync services I use for my Mac?
Syncing of Mac Dashboard widgets, keychains, Dock items, and System Preferences will not be part of iCloud, but will continue to be available for you to use until you move to iCloud. After you move to iCloud or after June 30, 2012, whichever comes first, those sync services will no longer be available. Other MobileMe services that are not transitioning to iCloud (iWeb publishing, Gallery, and iDisk) will continue to be available through June 30, 2012, even after you move to iCloud.

MobileMe Accounts

If I use different accounts for iTunes and MobileMe, can I merge them into a single account and use it with iCloud?
No. You cannot merge two accounts into one. However, you will be able to move your MobileMe account (yourname@me.com) to iCloud and, if you choose, you can continue to use a different iTunes account for store purchases and iTunes in the Cloud.

I currently use more than 5GB of storage in MobileMe. Will I be able to buy more storage for iCloud?
Yes. iCloud includes 5GB of free storage for mail, documents, and backup, which should be enough for most users. Purchased music, apps, and books do not count against this 5GB of storage, nor do the photos in your Photo Stream. If you still need more storage, you will be able to buy it. Details will be provided when iCloud is available this fall.

Can I upgrade my MobileMe account to a Family Pack or buy more MobileMe storage?
You can no longer upgrade your individual account to a Family Pack account or buy additional MobileMe storage. However, if you already have a Family Pack subscription, you can still create new family member accounts.

Can Family Pack members move their MobileMe accounts separately to iCloud?
Yes. The master account holder and each family member can move their individual accounts whenever they like, as long as they do so before June 30, 2012.

I purchased a MobileMe box and have not used the activation code inside.
How do I get a refund for it?
If you have an unused activation code from a MobileMe box, you can submit a refund request.

Can I cancel my MobileMe subscription and receive a refund?
You can cancel your service at any time and receive a prorated refund for the unused portion of your paid subscription. The free extension will not be included in the proration. When you cancel, all MobileMe services, including mail and syncing of contacts and calendars, will stop working, and your data will be removed from MobileMe.

Play Flash Games in Dashboard !

This tip is a simple one, targeted at those who of you who enjoy the occasional diversion via a quick Flash game in your browser, perhaps an old-school classic such as Space Invaders or Pac Man, or something different like Binball Wizard or Desktop Tower Defense.

Whatever your preference, the problem with many Flash game sites is that they're loaded with busy graphics, overly-intrusive ads, and hard-on-the-eyes color schemes. Some sites also require you to click through a few screens before you can get to the game itself. All together, these issues change what should be a fun and relaxing diversion into something that seems more like work (which may be what you were seeking relief from in the first place).

With just a bit of work using Safari 5 (or Safari 4 +), you can turn your favorite Flash games into Dashboard widgets. (If you prefer Firefox, you only need to use Safari long enough to do the conversion.) Once converted, your favorite Flash game is no more than a press of the Dashboard key away.

Converting a Flash game to a widget takes nothing more than a Safari's often-overlooked Web Clip tool and a few seconds of time. Web Clip lets you turn sections of web pages into Dashboard Widgets, and is often used for pictures, headlines, and other such often-updated content. But Web Clip doesn't care what you clip; it just creates a window into whatever region of the web page you select.

To convert your favorite Flash game into a widget, proceed to the web page that contains the game, and make sure the game is loading. Then click Safari's Web Clip button (just to the left of the URL entry area), and then drag the clipping square that appears around the actual gameplay area. When done, click the Add button. On some sites, you may have to experiment a bit--I sometimes found I needed to make the captured area larger than the actual gameplay surface in order to get a functional Widget. Also, some sites (especially those that load their games in pop-up windows) may not work at all with this method.

When you click Add, the selected region will open in Dashboard, and you're basically done--click the "i" button if you'd like to customize the frame, but other than that, your game is ready to go. Just keep in mind that if you ever use the "X" button to close the widget, it will be gone for good, as you can't save Web Clip-created Widgets.

Web Clip is one of Safari's more intriguing features; hopefully we'll see new functionality in future OS releases that will allow us to save our created widgets, which is really the only area where Web Clip is lacking.

Tile Game Tip !

Amongst the widgets that come with Mac OS X is the Tile Game. You shift around the tiles to reveal a picture of a snow leopard (or a leopard or a tiger, depending on your version of Mac OS X). If you play the Tile Game often, you might find the image a bit boring.

Luckily, changing the image is easy. Start by finding an image in iPhoto or the Finder to replace it. To avoid stretching, go for an image that is roughly square. Now click on the image and hold. While holding down the mouse button, press F12, or whatever key you have assigned to load up Dashboard. Now simply drag and drop your image onto the Tile Game.

Annoyingly, the image will change back to the tiger if you close the widget. Permanently changing the image is a bit more complicated. It essentially involves replacing an image file hidden within the widget file. If you are familiar with delving into package files, this is quite straightforward.

To change this image, first we need to find the Tile Game widget. It is located in the Library folder inside Macintosh HD. Make sure you don't accidentally go to the Library inside your user folder. Inside the Library, look for the folder called Widgets. In here you'll find the Tile Game. To get inside the package, right-click (or Control-click) on the file, and choose “Show Package Contents” from the menu that appears.

The file we want to change is called game.png, and is located inside the Images folder. Just replace this image with your new one, making sure you give it exactly the same file name.
